In 2024, Ukrainians opened 8 times as many new companies as closed – study

In 2024, just over 26,000 new companies were registered in Ukraine, which is 2.7% less than in 2023. The number of companies that ceased operations in 2024 amounted to 3,300 and decreased by 12.7% compared to 2023. This is evidenced by the data provided by the YC.Market platform, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

In which regions the most new companies appeared

In absolute terms, the largest number of companies in 2024 was registered in Kyiv – 9.2 thousand, Dnipropetrovska oblast – 2.2 thousand, and Lvivska oblast – 2.1 thousand.

However, when analyzing the dynamics of company start-ups in 2024, Kyiv, Cherkasy, and Khmelnytsky regions became the leaders in terms of growth in the share of newly established companies in Ukraine.

Thus, in the Kyiv region, the change in its share in the total number of registered companies in the country in 2024 compared to 2023 amounted to 0.5% – from 6.9 to 7.4%. In Cherkasy region, the change was 0.4%, in Khmelnytsky region – 0.3%.

In which industries new companies were most often established

In 2024, most new companies were registered in the following sectors: wholesale trade – 3.4 thousand, transport and logistics – 2.3 thousand, real estate operations – 2.2 thousand, construction – 2 thousand, and agriculture – 1.9 thousand.

Having calculated the share based on these absolute values, YC.Market experts determined that the machine building sector grew most dynamically in 2024: the change in share was 1.4% – from 2.5% in 2023 to 3.9% in 2024.

The share of newly created companies in telecommunications increased by 0.7%: from 0.2% to 0.9%. A positive trend is also observed in the electricity sector – plus 0.7%, and electronics, where growth is 0.5%.

In which regions and sectors the most companies closed

In total, almost 3.3 thousand companies ceased operations in Ukraine in 2024. Most closures took place in Kyiv – 528, Dnipropetrovska oblast – 395, Odesa oblast – 282, Lvivska oblast – 239, and Kharkivska oblast – 201. In 2024, the intensity of business liquidation increased the most in Dnipropetrovska, Kharkivska, and Poltavska oblasts.

According to the authors of the study, over the two years of full-scale war, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and Kyiv regions were the regions where the intensity of business liquidation increased the most. In 2024, the share of closed companies in Odesa region decreased by 1.2%, indicating a certain stabilization of business activity in the region.

In 2024, the maximum increase in the share of enterprises that ceased operations was observed in the agriculture sector, where it increased by 2%: from 15.4% to 17.4%.
