Ukraine may resume air travel next year, and in this context, Danylo Halytskyi Lviv Airport is even being mentioned as the first candidate for reopening. However, experts emphasize that this will only be possible if there is an appropriate political decision and safety confirmation from European regulators.

Komersant ukrainskyiKomersant Ukrainian asked aviation market expert Bohdan Dolintse whether it is realistic to achieve flight safety in the current conditions, when the Ukrainian sky is literally teeming with Russian missiles and drones.

The expert explained that the key safety factors for civil aviation are the altitude and the nature of the route of enemy missiles and drones.

“First of all, civilian aircraft usually fly at an altitude of 10-12 kilometers above the ground. Only in some cases, in case of emergency, they descend to an altitude of 3.5-4 kilometers. At an altitude of up to 4 km, they are usually only at the airport when climbing or landing. That is, 95% of the time in the air, they cannot cross paths with drones or cruise missiles,”

– Dolince emphasizes.

The second important factor, according to the expert, is the programmed routes for cruise missiles and drones.

“The route for cruise missiles and drones is programmed before the launch, meaning that they do not provide for a change of route after the launch,”

– emphasized the expert, meaning that the probability of accidental hitting a passenger plane is minimized.

Thus, according to Bohdan Dolince, civil aviation safety in Ukrainian airspace is quite real. So it’s time for political decisions and appropriate agreements with European regulators and insurers.
