This year, there is an alarming trend: applicants with low results in the National Multisubject Test (NMT), who score barely 160 points, are entering pedagogical specialities. This was noted by Tetiana Zakharchenko, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, senior lecturer at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics of the Faculty of Applied Sciences of UCU, Komersant ukrainskyi reports
On her Facebook page, Zakharchenko shared information about the state of education of future teachers in Ukraine. She drew attention to the fact that the best pedagogical universities are accepting applicants with rather low results in the National Multiple Subject Test (NMT) to study computer science.
“Now let’s talk a little bit about our future: teachers. We take the top 5 pedagogical universities (I took the first one from osvita.ua) and analyse how they enrolled future teachers of computer science (secondary education, computer science). At Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University, 30 students out of 60 applications for state-funded places scored less than 160 points. At Melitopol Bohdan Khmelnytsky State Pedagogical University, the situation is not much better – out of 10 applications, all for state-funded places, 3 applicants have less than 160 points,” Zakharchenko said.
According to her, a similar picture is observed in other pedagogical institutions:
- Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University.
Applications: 60 (all on the budget)
Budget: 38
Points (budget): 30 children have less than 160 - Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Melitopol State Pedagogical University
Applications: 10 (all on budget)
Budget: 7
Scores: 3 have less than 160 - Ivan Franko Drohobych State Pedagogical University
Applications: 40 (6 per contract)
Budget: 10
Scores: all from 160 and below (even the contract is not good) - Kryvyi Rih State Pedagogical University
Applications: 36 (3 for a contract)
Budget: 17
Scores: 16 out of 17 below 160 - Mykhailo Drahomanov Ukrainian State University
Applications: 36 (6 per contract)
Budget: 9
Scores: all 152 and below
“According to statistics, about 20% of graduates of pedagogical institutions will remain in the profession. And don’t watch physics at all, so that you don’t have nightmares,” Zakharchenko emphasised.
The situation with the shortage of teachers in Ukraine is becoming increasingly critical. For example, Ihor Likarchuk, director of the Ukrainian Centre for Educational Quality Assessment in 2006-2011 and 2014-2015 , recently pointed out that Kyiv lacks almost 1,400 teachers.
Similar problems are observed in other cities across the country. Educators from all over Ukraine confirmed in comments under the post that schools are facing serious difficulties due to the lack of qualified teachers.
We would like to add that the Ministry of Education and Science recently “renamed” Volyn region to “Lutsk” during a survey on education.
As a reminder, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Oksen Lisovyi recently announced that the Ministry of Education and Science had approved the Conceptual Framework for Reforming History Education in the General Secondary Education System. In the comments to this post, Ukrainians called Lisovyi the worst minister, an enemy of Ukraine and “worse than Tabachnyk”,
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine may get a new head in the near future. Kommersant Ukrainian has learned from its own sources that the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Oksen Lisovyi, may soon be dismissed.
