Trump says he’s now for Ukraine. But not for Zelensky
29 April 18:35
US President Donald Trump said that he fully anticipates the possibility of active assistance to Ukraine. Moreover, Trump said that he is now on the side of Ukraine. The US leader voiced these thoughts during an interview with The Atlantic, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing UNN.
It is worth noting that the interview, published on April 28, was recorded on April 24, i.e. before the meeting in the Vatican and Trump’s not-so-friendly comments about Putin.
In an interview with The Atlantic, Trump answered the question of whether it was possible that he would come to Ukraine’s aid with a large number of weapons in a rather unexpected way.
“Not necessarily weapons. There are many types of weapons. Not necessarily weapons with bullets. It can be a weapon with sanctions. It can be a weapon with banking. It can be many other weapons,”
– trump said.
Trump was then asked what Putin would have to do for the US President to say, “You know what? I’m on Zelenskiy’s side now.” Trump replied:
“Not necessarily on Zelenskiy’s side, but on Ukraine’s side, yes. But not necessarily on Zelensky’s side.”
The US president went on a tirade about Zelensky:
“You saw it here, when he was sitting in that chair [in the Oval Office], when he just couldn’t understand it. He got his way. But instead of saying, ‘Okay,’ when I made that statement, I said: “Well, we’re working to resolve this issue. We’re trying to help.” He said: “No, no, we need security too”. I said: “Security?” I actually said: “I don’t even know if we can put an end to this.” You know, he talked about security afterwards. After. And then he made a statement, something like they were fighting this alone, they had no one to help them. I said: “Well, we helped you with 350 billion dollars, and Europe helped you with much less money,” which is another thing that worries me.”
So, from this interview, it appears that Trump has a somewhat better attitude toward Ukraine than Zelenskyy. This is probably good news for Ukraine.
After this interview, Trump claimed that his meeting with Zelenskyy at the Vatican went well, and then wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that he now wonders if Putin even wants to stop the war, and mentioned sanctions as a reason.

Trump’s position on Ukraine
During the election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly said that he would stop the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. This deadline has already passed. After that, Trump’s entourage talked about 100 days within which he wanted to reach some kind of agreement. This deadline expires today. During this time, the US Presidential Administration has established contact with the Kremlin, but the fighting is still ongoing.
During the election, the media spread the so-called “Trump Plan”. The plan was that the United States would use its influence to stop the war and maintain the status quo. To do this, Trump would force Putin and Zelenskyy to sit down at the negotiating table. If Putin does not agree to negotiate, the United States will give Ukraine all the weapons it needs to win on the battlefield. If Zelenskyy refuses to negotiate, the United States will completely stop helping Ukraine.
This plan, in its various variations, included a provision that Russia would retain the territories it temporarily occupied and that Ukraine would not join NATO.
However, later Trump seemed to “forget” about this plan. In particular, he voiced scenarios in which he would force Russia to capitulate due to lower world oil prices. Presumably, he had similar ideas in mind when speaking to The Atlantic.
