Trump is under fire: a new investigation against the president may begin in the US

10 April 22:13

US President Donald Trump is once again at the center of a high-profile political and legal scandal, this time over suspicions of insider trading and abuse of power, while still in office. This is reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to TIME.

The media outlet writes that on April 9, 2025, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff called on Congress to investigate whether President Donald Trump was involved in insider trading or market manipulation when he suddenly suspended a wide range of tariffs, which led to a rapid rise in stock prices.

“I will do everything in my power to find out,” Schiff told TIME.

What preceded it

Donald Trump posted a cryptic message on his Truth Social platform:

“A great time for investors is coming soon – watch the numbers.”

The very next day, his administration announced the abolition of a number of trade duties imposed in 2018, including on imports of aluminum and steel from the EU, Canada, and Japan.

After that, stock indices went up sharply. Especially the shares of Trump Media & Technology Group, which was founded by Trump himself. This caused a storm of suspicion.

On MSNBC, Senator Elizabeth Warren called the president’s behavior “not just immoral, but potentially criminal,” and Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, announced his intention to seek the creation of an independent commission to investigate possible insider trading. Lawyers believe that Trump could have used non-public economic information for personal gain, which is a serious violation of the Securities Exchange Act.

Return of the “witch hunt”: old grievances and new cases

Trump also initiated the resumption of “internal audits” of a number of officials who had criticized him in previous years.

The list includes Miles Taylor, the author of an anonymous 2018 New York Times op-ed in which he called the Trump administration “chaotic” and “threatening the foundations of democracy.”

The case against Christopher Krebs, the former head of the Cybersecurity Agency (CISA), who called the 2020 elections “the most secure in US history,” has also been reopened. He was then fired personally by Trump via Twitter.

Now Trump is demanding that both be held accountable for “disloyalty” and “possible leakage of classified information.” The White House spokesman called it an “internal review in the interest of national security.” However, human rights organizations are already sounding the alarm, pointing to signs of politically motivated repression.

Cases against Trump stopped suddenly and quickly

A list of closed or frozen cases involving Donald Trump:

  • Mar-a-Lago. More than 300 documents marked “secret” were found in Trump’s Florida residence. The case was dismissed on March 7, 2025, when federal judge Raymond Dirie ruled that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith was “non-procedural.”
  • Georgia, 2020. Investigation into an attempt to put pressure on Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes”. Suspended indefinitely.
  • Storming of the Capitol. In 2023, Trump was found guilty of incitement. Today, these charges have been officially dropped due to the impossibility of prosecuting a sitting president under the Nixon v. Fitzgerald (1982) precedent.

According to political experts, the picture that has emerged looks alarming: as president, Trump is not just blocking his own cases, he is using his power to put pressure on those who opposed him. Combined with possible economic manipulation and conflicts of interest, this raises concerns about the degradation of the system of checks and balances in the United States.

If an investigation into insider trading is initiated, it will set a precedent: for the first time in the history of the United States, a sitting president may be prosecuted for such an economic crime.
