Ukrainian tennis player ElinaSvitolina failed to make it to the semifinals of the Australian Open and left the tournament at the quarterfinal stage, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

Svitolina, 27th in the world ranking, who showed a great game at the beginning of the tournament, including an impressive victory over the fourth world number four Jasmine Paolini, met in the quarterfinals with experienced American Madison Keys (14th in the world ranking).

The history of their personal meetings did not go in Svitolina’s favor – before this match, the American had won all three of their previous matches. It’s worth noting that Keys came into this match in good form, as evidenced by her victory over sixth-seeded Yelena Rybakina.

The match started very encouragingly for the Ukrainian tennis player. In the first set, at 2:2, Elina demonstrated her character by fending off two break points from Keys. Later, she managed to make a decisive break on the American’s serve and won the first set with a score of 6:3.

However, the game went according to a different scenario. In the second set, a single break at 3:2 in favor of Keys became fateful. A similar situation repeated itself in the decisive third set, where the American made a key break at 2:2.

The match statistics show that Svitolina played more carefully and accurately, making only 15 unforced errors against her opponent’s 41. The Ukrainian also defended her serve perfectly, winning 7 out of 9 break points. However, Keys was much more aggressive in the attack, which is reflected in the statistics of actively won balls – 49 against 20 in favor of the American.

The total duration of the match was 1 hour and 54 minutes, ending with Madison Keys’ victory with a score of 3:6, 6:3, 6:4.

For Svitolina, this is the third quarterfinal of the Australian Open that she has failed to overcome (the previous ones were in 2018 and 2019). With this defeat, she also lost the opportunity to win her 30th victory on the Melbourne courts.

In the semifinals, Madison Keys will meet world number two Iga Szwiątek. The other semifinal match will take place between the Spaniard Paula Badosa and the “neutral” Arina Sabalenka.
