On June 5, the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Lviv extended the pre-trial restraint for Vyacheslav Zinchenko, a suspect in the murder of linguist and public figure Iryna Farion. He will remain in custody without the right to be released on bail until August 4, 2025. This was reported by Suspilne, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Prosecutor Dmytro Petliovanyi insisted on extending the detention due to the gravity of the crime, while the defense demanded that the measure of restraint be changed to house arrest with an electronic bracelet. The court granted the prosecutor’s motion.
Zinchenko, now 18 years old, was detained in Dnipro on July 25, 2024. According to the investigation, on July 19 in Lviv, he committed an armed attack on Farion and then fled. The woman died in the hospital from her injuries.
The case has been reclassified as a premeditated murder committed on the grounds of national intolerance, related to the victim’s performance of a public duty, and illegal handling of weapons. According to the current charges, Zinchenko faces life imprisonment.
Iryna Farion is a well-known Ukrainian linguist, Doctor of Philology, professor, former Member of Parliament of Ukraine of the VII convocation, and an active participant in the language movement.
