Last year, Ukraine increased electricity imports by 5.5 times. This is evidenced by statistics released by the consulting company EXPRO, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

In 2024, our country imported 4.4 million MWh of electricity.

Imports peaked in June 2024, when Ukraine imported a total of 850 thousand MWh.

Countries from which Ukraine imports electricity:

  • Hungary – 39%;
  • Slovakia – 23%;
  • Romania – 18%;
  • Poland – 14%;
  • Moldova – 5%.

It should be noted that in December 2024, Ukraine increased electricity imports by 2.6 times compared to November 2024, to more than 430 thousand MWh.

Hungary continues to have the largest share in the import structure – 35%. Slovakia ranks second with 25%. Imports from Hungary increased the most over the month, by 4 times – up to 152 thousand MWh.

A few days earlier, Poland expressed its readiness to help Ukraine if Slovakia stops supplying electricity. According to the official, who wished to remain anonymous due to the secrecy of the negotiations, the Polish government is even ready to increase domestic electricity production to compensate for any imbalances that the overstretched Ukrainian power system may experience.

As you know, recently, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico threatened to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine. In this way, he wants to take revenge for Kyiv’s refusal to transit Russian gas to Europe.
