The United States has agreed to return Russian citizen Alexander Vinnik, who was extradited to the United States by Greece in 2021 on charges of money laundering through the BTC-e cryptocurrency exchange.

This was reported by the New York Post, which received confirmation from the White House, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

In July 2017, the Greek authorities detained Vinnik, who was suspected in the United States of organizing a $4 billion money laundering operation, which he did not admit to. Subsequently, Greece agreed to extradite him to the United States, and then to Russia, where he was also accused of large-scale fraud and even taken into custody in absentia.

Eventually, the Russian was extradited to France and then to the United States, where he pleaded guilty.

The day before, U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff actually flew to Moscow to pick up American Mark Vogel, who had spent more than three years behind bars on drug charges.

He was personally met by US President Donald Trump, who said that Vogel’s release “could be an important part” of ending the war in Ukraine.

In exchange for him, Russia is expecting the return of a Russian citizen in the coming days, whose name will be revealed when he arrives in Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
