Ukraine may receive missiles with a range of 370 to over 800 km in a new aid package this autumn. According to Reuters, these are JASSM air-to-surface cruise missiles. However, even if the United States officially announces the transfer, Ukraine will still have to wait several months to resolve all technical aspects. They say that the decision will now raise a number of questions for US presidential candidate Kamala Harris, and she allegedly does not know how to respond to the public. And while other world leaders like Boris Johnson are calling for the transfer of ATACMS to Ukraine and the lifting of all restrictions, the US is preoccupied with its election campaign. And Ukraine, in turn, is losing lives.
Amid talk of supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov once again threatened that there was no need to joke with red lines and that the Americans knew exactly where they were.
Many experts attribute the increase in the depth of damage to Russian territory by Western weapons to a possible escalation. However, it is already clear that the nuclear doctrine of the Russian Federation did not work when foreign troops invaded their own territory or the Kursk region is not part of Putin’s red lines.
Is the US forced to make concessions to Russia?
The United States will proceed from its own interests and will provide weapons in its own context, says Yuriy Romanenko, political expert, Director of the International and Domestic Policy Programme at the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, in an exclusive commentary to KU.
“If the US is asking Russia to negotiate with Iran so that the latter does not retaliate against Israel for the assassination of the Hamas leader, then Russia is asking for something in return. In particular, that the US does not give Ukraine the opportunity to strike at the territory of Russia with American weapons,” Yuriy Romanenko
According to Romanenko, the United States is probably ready to make concessions to Russia in order to close the Israeli issue, which is urgent for them.
“Unfortunately, not everything is tied to Ukraine. The United States is a global power that has dozens of different tracks that intertwine with the interests of Russia and other players,” Yuriy Romanenko
