A scandal erupted in Lviv: Vasyl Pylypyshyn, the chief mechanic of the Lviv Polytechnic National University, and his wife Olga, who started a scandal at a bank branch on May 5, began to settle their relationship with veteran Roman Yavorsky because the man was served out of turn. This was reported by the military man himself in a post on his Facebook page, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Roman Yavorsky explained that he came to the bank branch to apply for a card for disability payments. At that time, only two managers were serving people, and a queue of bank visitors formed. The man approached one of the employees of the financial institution, explained what he wanted to do and asked if he could be served out of line. The veteran received a positive response, as priority service is provided for by law in his case.

“I heard a woman in the queue start to get indignant, saying they let me in without waiting in line. I explained to her that I was a combatant and was applying for a disability. The bank employee also said that everything is legal… And she said to my face, you are not a veteran, your arms and legs are intact, so what kind of veteran are you,” Yavorsky wrote.

The bank visitor (as it later turned out, it was Olga Pylypyshyn) continued to humiliate the honor and dignity of the Ukrainian veteran: she insulted the man’s mother, said that the man belonged in a psychiatric hospital and stated that “Muscovites beat you there (in the combat zone – ed.).”

“In the end, she left. She was treated quickly. I heard her words in my head that her son was also serving. But how can a mother whose son is serving wish another soldier to be killed by Muscovites? And for what? For a place in line,” the soldier asked in his post.

Yavorsky also said that after a while his abuser returned with her husband. Now Olha and Vasyl Pylypyshyn called the veteran a “liar” and said that the man had never been at the front.

“I took out my phone and turned on the camera. Let the recording remain. Let people see how they ‘thank’ those who, as they say, defended their peace. I have no words. There is only pain. Bitterness. And shame. For such people. What did we fight for? For such an attitude? For being humiliated when we can barely stand on our feet?” – the soldier wrote.

He attached the video to his post on the social network.

Who the offenders were and what is known about them

In the comments to the soldier’s post, Ukrainians identified his offenders. They were the couple Vasyl and Olha Pylypyshyn . Journalist Mykola Savelyev said that Pylypyshyn is an employee of the Department of Capital Repairs of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Lviv Polytechnic National University. His wife, Olha, was a wardrobe attendant.

How Ukrainians reacted to the incident

Ukrainians left more than 1.5 thousand comments under Roman Yavorsky’s post alone. People wrote that:

  • “The SBU should deal with such people (Yavorsky’s offenders – ed.).
  • People believe that a soldier should come back from the war in a coffin, or without arms and legs, unfortunately, this is true.
  • That’s why I rarely show my ID card anymore.
  • Believe me, almost every defender goes through this.
  • As for me, there are signs of Article 296 of the Criminal Code. Moreover, part 2 “by a group of persons”. Perhaps the Police of Lviv region will be able to identify the persons and try to bring them to justice.
  • I am bitter and sad for these fellow citizens.
  • Perhaps you should go to the police and write a statement. An act of hooliganism was committed against you.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi also responded to the incident. The head of the city wrote that not all veterans wear uniforms, not all have visible scars, but each of them has gone through their own hell.

“That is why we cannot remain silent when something like what one of our soldiers said happens – humiliation, insults, public devaluation of his service. This is not just an unfortunate incident. This is a wake-up call that we all need to remember that there is a war going on. That there are people around us who have lost their health, loved ones, and peace,” Sadovyi wrote.

He added that Lviv has been and remains a city of respect for the Ukrainian military.

What Lviv Polytechnic National University says

Following the publicity, Lviv Polytechnic National University responded to the scandal with its employees and the Ukrainian military. The university’s Communication Center reported that the Pylypyshyns had been dismissed from their positions.

“The participant in the incident, Vasyl Pylypyshyn, foreman of the chief mechanic department, was fired today, May 6, 2025. His wife, Olha Pylypyshyn, worked as a wardrobe attendant in the economic department from October 16, 2024, to April 30, 2025,” the statement said.

Representatives of the People’s Party also apologized for the behavior of their former employees.

“The administration of Lviv Polytechnic National University is outraged by the unlawful and rude behavior of two former employees of the university towards Ukrainian serviceman with a disability Roman Yavorsky. We categorically condemn any manifestation of disrespect or discrimination, especially against the defenders of our country. Such behavior is absolutely unacceptable and incompatible with the values of our university,” the statement reads.

What Vasyl Pylypyshyn says himself

on May 6, Pylypyshyn spoke to ZAXID.NET and said that the conflict was provoked.

According to him, Roman Yavorsky scolded Olga Pylypyshyn, his wife, which caused “such a reaction.” Mr. Pylypyshyn plans to take legal action “to protect his honor and dignity.”

In a commentary to hromadske, representatives of the financial institution said that decent service for veterans is one of the main priorities of the bank, and as part of the inclusive program “My Barrier-Free”, the institution implements many projects that help in the rehabilitation of veterans and their reintegration into civilian life.

“All bank employees have completed inclusive service courses, with a separate section dedicated to veterans’ services. During this situation, our employees acted in accordance with the current procedures and regulations,” the bank’s branch told reporters.

What is known about Roman Yavorsky
