Kyiv police have opened a criminal investigation into a fire on the capital’s Osokorky Lakes, which occurred the day before, on 5 March. This was reported by the Kyiv police, according to Kommersant Ukrainian
The fire destroyed about three hectares of dead wood on the territory of a landscape reserve of local importance.
The case was opened under the article on intentional destruction or damage to territories taken under state protection and objects of the nature reserve fund, which caused serious consequences (Part 2 of Article 252 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The perpetrators face up to 12 years in prison.
The causes and consequences of the fire were investigated by law enforcement, environmental services and other authorised agencies. The investigation was taken under personal control by the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Serhiy Popko, the Kyiv City State Administration reported.
“According to preliminary data, about 3 hectares of the territory burned down, including part of the Osokorkivski Luki landscape reserve ,
– the statement said.
The extent of damage to the protected wetlands system will be determined by environmentalists. As the area has a nature conservation status, the destruction of flora and fauna is strictly prohibited. For such actions, the Criminal Code of Ukraine provides for a fine of UAH 8.5 million or imprisonment for 3 years.
“We will consider all versions, including arson. The investigative team of the Darnytsia Department of the National Police in Kyiv is currently working at the scene,”

Now the territory of the Ecopark is guarded round the clock by firefighters of the State Emergency Service. They are monitoring possible re-ignitions with the help of UAVs.
What is known about the fire in Osokorky
A fire broke out on theterritory of Osokorky Meadows Park on 5 March near Lake Tyahle on an area of about three hectares. It was contained at 23:15 and extinguished at 23:57.
The rescuers recorded that the fire started on dry grass and reeds in an open area. Firefighting was complicated by flooding of access roads. In addition to the rescuers, the eco-activists and not indifferent Kyiv residents joined the firefighting.
Osokorky Ecopark is a favourite place for recreation for Kyiv residents, it is called the green pearl of Kyiv. It has a young forest and floodplain lakes.
