Some important facts about the history of the National Anthem of Ukraine
22 years ago, on March 6, 2003, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law of Ukraine “On the National Anthem of Ukraine”. According to this law, the national anthem “Ukraine Has Not Yet Died” to the music of Mykhailo Verbytskyi and the lyrics of the first verse and chorus of Pavlo Chubynskyi’s poem were approved as the national anthem of Ukraine.
The text of Pavlo Chubynsky’s poem and, accordingly, the future anthem were first published in the fourth issue of the Lviv magazine Meta in 1863.
Soon after its publication, Pavlo Chubynsky’s poem was set to music by composer Mykhailo Verbytskyi, and on March 10, 1865, the song was performed for the first time in Przemysl during a concert dedicated to Taras Shevchenko.
The first known audio recording of the Ukrainian national anthem was made in October 1910 in Cologne at the local branch of the classical music recording company Gramophon. The anthem was performed by the famous Ukrainian opera tenor singer Modest Mentsynsky.
Today, anyone can listen to this recording on the YouTube channel of the Solomiya Krushelnytska Music Memorial Museum in Lviv.
on December 5, 1991, the anthem was first performed at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine dedicated to the results of the all-Ukrainian referendum and the presidential election by the Veriovka Choir.
on January 15, 1992, the Ukrainian parliament approved the musical version of the National Anthem of Ukraine composed by Mykhailo Verbytskyi, but the words of Pavlo Chubynskyi’s poetry were not officially approved as an anthem.
Only on March 6, 2003, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law of Ukraine “On the National Anthem of Ukraine.” At the suggestion of then-President Leonid Kuchma, the first line of the song was changed: instead of “Ukraine, its glory and its freedom have not yet died,” it became “Ukraine’s glory and its freedom have not yet died.”
