Scanners against smuggling: customs control will be strengthened at the borders of Ukraine
2 January 13:37New mobile scanners will be launched at checkpoints with Romania, Slovakia, and Moldova, which will significantly strengthen cargo control and the fight against smuggling. This was reported by the State Customs Service, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
The USAID Economic Support for Ukraine project has purchased five mobile X-ray scanners to improve the efficiency of customs control at checkpoints on Ukraine’s border with Slovakia, Romania, and Moldova.
It is noted that this equipment will significantly reduce the time of customs clearance of vehicles and help minimize the human factor.
Two scanners will soon be installed at thePorubne-Siretcheckpoints on the border with Romania andUzhhorod-Vysne Nemeckeon the border with Slovakia.
In January 2025, the third scanner will be installed at theOrlivka-Isacceaferry crossing point on the border with Romania, which provides a direct trade route to Southern Europe and Turkey.
The installation of two more scanners is scheduled for April 2025. They will complement the infrastructure of theReni Giurgiulestiroad checkpoints on the border with Moldova andDyakove-Halmeuon the border with Romania.
The new equipment is designed to inspect vehicles and cargo using high-energy X-rays. The ability to perform non-intrusive inspection, i.e. inspection without the need to open vehicles or luggage, will reduce the time of customs procedures, which in turn will help increase trade turnover.
The mobility of these scanners allows them to be placed in the locations required by customs officers, adapting to the situations that arise at checkpoints.
