The US sanctions against Gazprombank threaten the energy security of some Central European countries. This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Bloomberg.
As a reminder, the United States has expanded the sanctions list against the Russian Federation, imposing sanctions on dozens of Russian banks, securities registrars and financial officials. This time, the list includes Gazprombank, BCS Bank, and CentroCredit.
Szijjártó said that the sanctions against Gazprombank are “an attack on our sovereignty,” so Hungary is “reviewing the situation” with the energy ministers of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria and Serbia.
“Hungary is grateful to Turkey, Bulgaria and Serbia for ensuring a very safe, very reliable and very stable transit (of gas),” he said.
It is noted that Hungary, along with Slovakia and Austria, are several EU countries that still depend on Russian gas supplies. European countries use Gazprombank to pay for these supplies, and the sanctions increase the risk that they could be cut off at a time when prices are close to their highest for the year
Bloomberg emphasizes that the cessation of gas supplies from Russia to Europe could increase competition for global supplies and lead to higher prices for natural gas, which would hit European consumers.
