Komersant ukrainskyi ANALYSIS

Easter in Ukraine is just over a month away, but preparations have already begun. Some products for the Easter table can be purchased in advance to avoid high prices during the pre-holiday rush. However, not all of them. Most products still need to be fresh, so you have to buy them on the eve of the holiday. Increased demand means that prices for products used to prepare holiday dishes usually rise before Easter. Komersant ukrainskyi tried to figure out which products will become more expensive before the holiday and how much the prices will rise.

Assessing future trends, we can identify several categories of goods that are likely to rise in price. This primarily concerns the main products for the holiday table, such as eggs, meat, and sausages.

Easter table will be a quarter more expensive than last year’s

Forecasts of how much eggs, meat and other products will rise in price vary.

In an exclusive interview for explained:

“Traditionally, during the holidays in Ukraine, there is an increased demand for products that are the mainstays of the holiday table. This trend will continue this year as well. However, we cannot ignore the other side of the issue – the rise in food prices that occurred at the end of last year and the beginning of this year. This has a significant impact on the purchasing power of Ukrainians, and for many, the holiday table may become unaffordable due to high prices.”

Novak noted that although demand for food will increase, sales volumes will be lower precisely because of the price increase.

“Therefore, I do not expect a sharp rise in prices, because they are already at a high level. If prices for some products do rise, it will be a slight increase that we can see only a few days before the holidays,”

– the economist commented.

As for the expected cost of the Easter table, Novak predicts that it will be 20-25% higher than last year.

Eggs for 80 UAH each

Economist Oleh Pendzin also spoke about the rise in prices for eggs and meat, which traditionally rise in price before Easter:

“It’s still more than a month before the holidays, and it’s hard to predict the exact price dynamics. However, we can assume that eggs and meat will rise in price due to increased demand. However, many things can change due to external factors, such as possible changes in the economic situation or a ceasefire that could affect consumer sentiment,”

– commented the expert .

Pendzin pointed out that although egg prices were at 65 hryvnias per dozen in mid-winter, a traditional price increase can be expected before the holidays:

“It will be a typical rise, and I think the cost of a dozen eggs may reach 75-80 UAH by Easter.”

Price expectations: there will be an increase, but not a catastrophic one

Economists also note that although prices for some products will rise, they will change gradually. In particular, a significant rise in prices will occur only in the last few days before the holidays, and this applies mainly to goods for which demand traditionally increases.

Thus, the traditional increase in prices for holiday food is likely to be present, but a sharp rise in prices is unlikely to occur. According to experts, Ukrainians should be prepared for the fact that this year’s Easter basket will cost 20-25% more than last year.

Food prices can fluctuate due to various factors, such as seasonal changes, production costs, logistics costs, and general economic processes in the world. Therefore, consumers should keep an eye on market changes and, where possible, purchase foods that may become more expensive in advance.

This applies to eggs, meat, sausages, and baking ingredients such as flour, sugar, oil, and dried fruit. These products have a long shelf life, so you can buy them in advance and store them in the refrigerator or freezer.
