“Shakhtar lost to Marseille and crashed out of the Europa League

Shakhtar Donetsk lost to French side Marseille in the return leg of the Europa League 1/16 finals and ended their European competitions in the 2023/24 season, reports

The first match between the Miners and the Provencals, which took place on 15 February at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany, ended in a 2-2 draw. So before the return leg, the teams had equal chances of reaching the last 16.

Marseille defender Jonathan Clos brought down Eginalda in the penalty area, with Georgi Sudakov converting the penalty.

In the 23rd minute, midfielder Amin Arit took advantage of Taras Stepanenko’s mistake to pass to forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who restored parity and became the Europa League record holder for goals scored.

Shakhtar and Marseille went into the break with the score tied.

In the second half, the teams exchanged chances, with Shakhtar taking the lead, but Marseille scored in the 74th minute: a cross from the right flank by Veretou ended in a pass from Aubameyang to Sarri, who put the French team ahead. In the 81st minute, Marseille scored for the third time.

Thus, the match ended with a score of 3-1 (5-3 on aggregate), Shakhtar Donetsk finished their Europa League campaign, while Marseille advanced to the last 16.
