SBU prevents large-scale FSB sabotage in Kirovohrad region and detains perpetrators of terrorist attack in Zhytomyr
27 November 13:56The Security Service of Ukraine has detained a Russian agent who tried to burn down a power substation that supplies power to a military airfield and other strategic facilities in Kirovohrad region. This was reported by the SBU, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
The detainee was a 21-year-old local resident who was remotely recruited by the FSB in August 2024. The young man came to the attention of the occupiers because of his pro-Kremlin comments on the aggressor country’s Telegram channels.
To perform “verification” tasks, the agent collected information on the technical condition of power facilities, tracked the locations of military hospitals and buildings of the military-commercial complex, and transmitted the information via messenger to his Russian supervisor.
Later, the agent received a new task – to enter the territory of a key power substation in the region and set it on fire with a flammable mixture, and then film the fire.
The SBU officers exposed the traitor in advance and detained him red-handed while he was conducting additional reconnaissance near the target. At the same time, comprehensive measures were taken to secure the locations of the Defense Forces in the areas of the agent’s reconnaissance activity.
The offender is in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The SBU and the National Police also detained 5 Russian agents who committed a terrorist attack in the central part of Zhytomyr on November 20 this year – they remotely detonated an improvised explosive device near the building of the local police department. The explosion injured one law enforcement officer who was at the scene.
According to the case, the attackers acted on the order of Russian special services, which recruited them through Telegram channels in search of “quick money”. On the instructions of their Russian handlers, they stuffed the explosives with nails and disguised them in a thermos, and detonated them “remotely” using a mobile phone.
All five terrorists, who acted separately from each other, were detained in hot pursuit as a result of a special operation in the regional center. Among them was a 46-year-old Kharkiv resident who had twice served a sentence for robbery and burglary. Also, Zhytomyr residents aged 15, 16, 18 and 20 joined the enemy’s tasks.
The criminals are in custody. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
