A criminal case has been opened in Ukraine against Anastasia Trofimova, the director of the documentary Russians at War. This was announced by MP, chairman of the parliamentary committee on freedom of speech Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, Komersant UkrainianKomersant Ukrainian reports

“Today I learned that, following my appeal, the Security Service of Ukraine has initiated a pre-trial investigation in criminal proceedings on the grounds of Part 3 of Article 436-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (“Justification and recognition of the legitimacy of Russian aggression”). We are following the progress,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

The MP also published a response from First Deputy Prosecutor General Oleksiy Khomenko to his appeal. The letter states that the SBU started the pre-trial investigation on 3 October.

Yurchyshyn noted that Anastasia Trofimova illegally crossed the state border of Ukraine together with Russian troops and released a film in which the Russian occupiers “are presented with a human face”.

“Trofimova lives in Canada and made the film at the expense of Canadian taxpayers. Last week, the Canadian Parliamentary Committee on National Security acknowledged that the state cannot fund such films and discussed the threats posed by Russian disinformation. I am grateful for the response, but I would like to see stricter punishment for violations of Ukrainian law. And it is Ukraine that should be the first to open a case against Trofimova,” he said.

It should be noted that on 26 September, MP Yaroslav Yurchyshyn filed an application with the Office of the Prosecutor General and the Security Service of Ukraine and asked to open a case against the director of the documentary Russians at War.
