The Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region has already forced Russians to contact Ukraine about the exchange of prisoners. The Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, said this during a telethon, reports Komersant ukrainskyi
“There was a proactive conversation [on the Russian side] – we are now exchanging information. I also inform the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN that the rights of Russian prisoners of war are protected, we are monitoring this situation, and Ukraine is ready to continue exchange processes at any time on the basis of the Geneva Convention,”
– lubinets said.
He also added that Ukrainian servicemen strictly comply with international humanitarian law.
“Based on the Geneva Convention, the Ukrainian Armed Forces take Russian soldiers prisoner without subjecting them to torture and ill-treatment,”
– the Ombudsman said.
Lubinets stressed that Ukraine is ready to open humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of the local population and the access of international organisations. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military is providing humanitarian aid to the locals, providing them with food, water and medicine.
Kursk offensive
The Ukrainian Armed Forces offensive in the Kursk region of Russia began on 6 August. Since then, there has been constant fighting there, and Russia has introduced a counter-terrorism operation in three regions bordering Ukraine.
According to unconfirmed reports, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have advanced up to 30 km in some areas. Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky reported to Supreme Commander-in-Chief Volodymyr Zelenskyy that 74 settlements were under the control of the Armed Forces. Later, information appeared about the control of 100 settlements.
