1 January 21:47During the Russian drone attack on Kyiv on January 1, Ukrainian neuroscientist Ihor Zyma and his wife were killed. Journalist and documentary screenwriter Oleksiy Bobrovnikov wrote about this on his Facebook page, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
“Today, the enemy attacked the city and hit the apartment of our friend Igor Zima, a neuroscientist, professor, and specialist in odors,” the journalist wrote.
At 11:00 a.m., he still did not have accurate information about Ihor Zyma and hoped that he had survived the drone attack. But at 17:39 he wrote about the man’s death.
Daria Dushechkina, a journalist and Bobrovnikov’s wife, also posted about the death of the neuroscientist and his wife.
“In the first drone attack on Kyiv 2025, our friend, an outstanding person, Doctor of Science Ihor Zyma was killed, along with his wife and cat. Right at home. In bed,” she wrote.
What is known about Ihor Zyma
Ihor Zyma taught at the Institute of Biology and Medicine of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and his academic experience was more than 40 years. He led a research group that conducted research in the field of neuro- and psychophysiology. The scientist was a member of “such scientific societies as the Ukrainian Physiological Society and the Ukrainian Society of Neuroscience.”
His research interests included the mechanisms of cognitive activity of the human brain, emotions, attention and decision-making systems, RSN and relaxation, electrophysiology of neural networks, and neuropsychology.

What happened in Kyiv on January 1, 2025
On the morning of January 1, the Russian army attacked Ukraine with attack UAVs. Air defense was activated in Kyiv and the region. In the capital, debris fell in several districts: Pechersk and Sviatoshynskyi.
