Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Massoud Peseshkian have signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement following talks in Moscow. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to Russian media.

The document is the result of talks for which the Iranian leader arrived in Moscow on January 17. Work on the agreement has been underway since 2022, and its text was agreed upon in June 2024.

“We have been working on it for a long time, and I am very pleased that this work has been completed. This is important because it will give us the opportunity to give additional impetus to almost all areas of our cooperation,” the Russian president said.

Media reports say that the agreement cements the countries’ status as strategic partners and covers mutual defense, counterterrorism, finance, industry and culture. Prior to that, Russia and Iran were guided by a cooperation agreement signed in 2001.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi clarified that the agreement allegedly covers aspects of defense and security cooperation, but does not provide for the creation of a military alliance.

Earlier, Russia signed a similar agreement with the DPRK, after which it began to use North Korean soldiers in the war against Ukraine in the Kursk region.
