A Russian missile exploded just 500 metres away from President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during their meeting in Odesa on 6 March. This was reported by Kommersant Ukrainian citing CNN.
According to the source, the leaders’ escort group felt an impact and saw a mushroom cloud of smoke.
Zelenskyy said he was close enough to see and hear the impact.
“We saw this impact today. You see who we are dealing with, they don’t care where they hit. I don’t know all the details yet, but I know there are dead and wounded. We have to protect ourselves first and foremost. The best way to do this is with an air defence system,”
– Zelenskyy said in Odesa on Wednesday.
Mitsotakis said Zelenskiy gave him a tour of the city, which has suffered massive damage from years of Russian strikes, before they heard the air raid sirens.
“Shortly after we got into our cars, we heard a big explosion. I think this is the best, most vivid reminder for us that there is a real war going on here. Every day there is a war that affects not only the frontline and soldiers, it affects our innocent citizens,”
– Mitsotakis said.
At the same time, the spokesperson for the Southern Defence Forces, Natalia Gumenyuk, said that the strike was not intended to target the leaders of the states, but the port infrastructure.
“Yes, Odesa was hit by a missile strike, probably with ballistic weapons, hitting one of the buildings in the port infrastructure. But this has nothing to do with a specific visit. It is related to terror, which the enemy is quite methodically conducting,”
– said Humeniuk.
Five people were killed in yesterday’s Russian attack on Odesa.
