The Republican Party gains a majority in the US Senate: what it means

6 November 08:56

According to the preliminary results of the US elections, the Republican Party wins a majority of seats in the US Senate. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to the Associated Press and Reuters.

There are 100 seats in the US Senate, most of which are held by the Democratic Party (48 Democrats and three independent senators). The Republicans have 49 seats.

According to the interim results of the US elections, Donald Trump’s party is gaining a majority in the Senate. As of 00:00 Washington time (07:00 Kyiv time), it is known that the Republicans have won 51 seats against 42 seats already held by the Democrats. This gives the party the main center of power in Washington and the important power to approve the next president’s cabinet, as well as any Supreme Court justice if there is a vacancy.

The Republicans gained control of the US Senate with victories in West Virginia and Ohio, ensuring that Donald Trump’s party will control at least one chamber of Congress next year.

The Associated Press emphasizes that the Republican Party gained control of the Senate after Senator Deb Fischer was re-elected in Nebraska. Despite the existing majority, the Republicans still have the opportunity to increase their majority – data from some states are not yet known.

As the control of the Senate goes to the Republicans, the fight for the House of Representatives continues. There are 435 seats there.

For Republicans, this is a chance to gain full control of Congress as they try to break through to power. For the Democrats, a majority in the House of Representatives would give them important control over the GOP’s power and force a compromise in Washington.

Senate races are being decided across the country, from tight races in New York to elections in California, where the winner could take several days to be determined.

According to preliminary results, Republicans have a 178 to 141 advantage over Democrats.

In the 2024 elections, one-third of the Senate is up for re-election, with Democrats making up the majority of the outgoing senators.

The US Senate has 100 seats in total. Earlier in their pre-election forecasts, experts gave a high chance of changing the majority in favor of the Republicans.

Elections to the US Senate have a significant impact on determining the country’s political course, as well as on supporting or blocking the initiatives of the current president. At the same time, it may lead to a situation where Congress and the White House will be in a state of confrontation.

Campaign for Senate Republican Leader Launches

A few minutes after the AP announced that the Republicans would control the Senate, one of several contenders to replace Republican leader Mitch McConnell put forward his arguments.

Senator John Cornyn, in a statement on Wednesday morning, talked about his experience as a GOP vote counter during Trump’s first term and working with the rank and file.

“As I said, this election is not about us, it’s about what’s best for the conference and the nation. I look forward to working with President Trump and our new conservative majority to make America great again by making the Senate work again,” the Texas Republican said.

Another contender for the position of majority leader at the new GOP conference is GOP Senator John Thune.

The South Dakota lawmaker was initially seen as McConnell’s obvious successor given his position as the conference’s vote counter, but his fellow Republicans have made the race much more contentious over the past year.
