Record at Book Country: what Ukrainian readers bought

VDNKh hosted the third Book Country festival, which became one of the largest literary events in Ukraine. This year’s event set a record for the number of books sold. This was reported by the press service of the Book Country, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“According to the participants, about 90,000 books totaling UAH 28 million were purchased at the festival, which is a record for the Book Country,” the statement said.

Among the books that were bought most often:

  • Bookstore E: “One Foot Under Kyiv” (Serhiy Skryshevsky), “That Mountain is You” (Brianna West), “Frontmen”;
  • Readeat: Colony (Max Kidruk), We Will Find Our Marseilles (Anna Miroshnychenko), Murderous Writers (Sasha Pavlova);
  • Yakaboo: “Buy Yourself a Fucking Bouquet (Tara Shuster), Women Running with Wolves (Clarissa Pinkola Estes), Shadow of the Gods (John Gwynne);
  • Vivat: The Bride (Ali Hazelwood), Behind the Net (Stephanie Archer), The Villain’s Assistant (Hannah Nicole Merer), Never Lie (Heather McFadden);
  • KSD: “Higher than Heaven (Liz Tomford), Twilight (Penelope Douglas), The Right Decision (Liz Tomford), and The Full Moon (Kateryna Samoilenko);
  • Fabula Publishing House: “The Animant Crumb Book Chronicles” (Lin Rina), “A Prayer for Owen Meany” (John Irving), “Eliza Hamilton. The Case of the Suitcase” (Lin Rina);
  • Old Lion Publishing House: “The Sheep Are Whole (Yevhenia Kuznetsova), Ask Miechka (Yevhenia Kuznetsova), The Magpie Murder (Anthony Horowitz), I See You Are Interested in Darkness (Illarion Pavliuk);
  • Bogdan Publishing House: “Does Heaven See Cats, The Reaper Without a Scythe (Oleksandra Cherepan), Worlds of Exile and Illusion (Ursula Le Guin);
  • “Laboratory: “Where Books Live” (Vitaliy Dulenko), “There is Land Beyond the Dig” (Anastasia Levkova), “All Characters are Fictional. Or not” (Yulia Laba), “Elasmobranchs will live with us” (Roman Holubovsky).

“We can confidently say that Book Country has become an important part of the literary and cultural life of Ukrainians. We are sincerely proud of this and thank everyone who supports the festival and joins it. I believe that the next Book Country will also offer something new and interesting,” said Yevhen Mushkin, founder of Book Country.

Over the four days of the festival, 365 events took place, including 120 presentations, 72 discussions, 63 master classes and 60 book signings. About 13,000 people attended the events. The fair had 140 participants: bookstores, publishers, shops and authors. The festival brought together over 72,500 guests.

Over three seasons, the Book Country festival has attracted more than 210,000 visitors, making it one of the largest in Ukraine.

The next event will take place in the fall, from September 25 to 28 at VDNKh.
