Many Russian regions are unable to cover the increased costs of paying contract soldiers fighting against the Ukrainian military, as demanded by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to the a report by Bloomberg article.
It says that Putin has increased one-time payments to contract soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces to 400,000 Russian rubles. After that, some governors asked for financial assistance from the Kremlin, as they could not find such funds within their region.
Only 27 regions were able to fulfil the president’s demand, while the remaining 10 remain well below the required level, paying 50-100 thousand rubles.
Meanwhile, Moscow is offering a record 1.9 million rubles for new contract soldiers, trying to find 23,000 people willing to go to war in Ukraine by the end of the year.
Many regions of Russia have faced a decline in local budget revenues and spending cuts. This is at a time when the army needs almost 30,000 people a month to compensate for losses at the front, which have exceeded 500,000 killed and wounded, according to Western experts.
