Former Latvian national football team striker Andrejs Prokorenkovs dies

Former Latvian men’s national football team forward Andrejs Prokorenkovs has died at the age of 48.

This was reported by the Latvian Football Federation (LFF), Delfi writes , "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

At the end of last year, Prokorenkov was diagnosed with a malignant tumor.

Prokorenkov made his debut for the Latvian national team in 2002 in a match against Poland, and in the following years he became a regular player in the main team. By 2007, he had played 32 matches for the national team and scored four goals.

At the final tournament of the 2004 European Championship in Portugal, Prokorenkov played in the starting lineup of the Latvian national team in all matches. It was after his assist that Maris Verpakovskis scored Latvia’s only goal in the match against the Czech Republic.

Throughout his football career, Prokhorenko played for various Latvian clubs and also represented Poland, Spain, Israel and Greece. After finishing his career in Ogre, he took up coaching. As a player, he became a champion of Latvia and Israel.
