Poland’s capital Warsaw will spend 117 million zlotys ($30 million) over the next two to three years on bomb shelters and other security measures. This was reported by Kommersant Ukrainian citing Reuters.
Although Poland, a NATO member, has assured citizens that its place in the alliance guarantees security from any Russian attack, Moscow’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine has prompted preparations for potential attacks.
“On our own initiative, we have made an inventory of places to take shelter,”
– said Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski after the publication of a report by Poland’s Supreme Audit Office on the provision of bomb shelters in the country.
According to the fire service, less than 4% of the population can count on a place to hide.
The report also found a lack of basic regulations on shelters, including the necessary equipment and specifications required for protective structures.
Some 7 million square metres of buildings in Warsaw that could serve as shelters include underground car parks and metro stations.
“117 million (PLN) for security improvements is money for the next two to three years, and we are ready to allocate even more for this purpose,”
– Trzaskowski said.
According to him, hospitals will be prepared for threats, and members of the public will be taught how to act in emergency situations.
It is worth noting that Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosyniak-Kamysh admits the possibility of a Russian attack on NATO if Ukraine loses the war.
Earlier, Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, chairman of NATO’s military committee, said that the West should be prepared for a war with Russia . According to him, it is not only about NATO armies, which are certainly ready for this, but also about the civilian population
