An operating mink farm is for sale in the village of Velyka Karatul, Boryspil district, Kyiv region. It is offered as a ready-made profitable business, where all production processes meet the best world standards, reports Komersant ukrainskyi.

For 6 million euros, the new owner will be able to immediately receive up to 190 thousand mink skins a year, Informator reports .

The announcement of the sale of a rare agricultural enterprise has recently appeared on specialized real estate sites.

There are very few mink farms in Ukraine – only 9 are members of the Association of Fur Breeders, and four of them operate in the Kyiv region. The enterprise offered for sale is located 70 kilometers from Kyiv, on the highway near the town of Pereyaslav in Boryspil district.

What is the area of the farm?

The farm covers an area of 46.8 hectares, the land is owned. As for the production capacity, the announcement announces 150 thousand -190 thousand mink skins per year. And with additional investments of 6 million euros, which it costs, this number can be more than doubled – up to 350-400 thousand per year.

The sellers also calculated the “piece” profit: it is notedthat the cost of production of one skin in 2023 -2024 was 21-23 euros, and the expected selling price this season is 36-40. That is, the owner earns from 13 to 17 euros per animal. Given this fact, it will take at least 4-5 years to recoup the investment.

The announcement does not specify the name of the farm, however, open sources suggest that it is Viking Mink Farm LLC, built in 2011. According to Wikipedia, as of 2019, there were 103 sheds (long sheds with two rows of cages and a passage between them), the breeding stock of mink was 40 thousand, and 104 workers worked on the farm. In 2019, in an interview with NV Business, one of the former founders of Viking Farm said that mink breeding is a complicated business, and the animals are quite demanding in terms of living conditions.

In addition, it is impossible to enter the international market without the European WelFur certificate, which means that the company has implemented the strictest European production standards, in particular, in terms of animal welfare. Five mink breeding companies currently have such certificates, and Viking is one of them. However, there remains an important ethical component that has not yet been enshrined in law.

In 2019, a bill was registered that prohibits the commercial breeding of animals for fur production. It provides for imprisonment for a term of two to five years. But it has not yet been approved, although this does not affect the opinion of environmentalists and animal rights activists who oppose breeding for fur.
