Over 25,000 Ukrainians sign petition to Zelensky to veto draft law on switching to daylight saving time
9 October 21:05A petition calling on the President of Ukraine to veto a bill to abolish time-saving measures has received the 25,000 votes needed for consideration. This is reported by Komersant Ukrainian with reference to the website of electronic petitions.
The petition in question is No. 22/230584-ep. It was authored by Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko.
The parliamentarian believes that the cancellation of the transition from “winter” to “summer” time and vice versa causes significant problems and inconveniences, primarily for citizens. Thus, according to the “new time”, dawn in the summer will come around 3:00. This will be especially noticeable in the east of the country. And it will get dark at around 20:00.
In addition, this decision will not be helpful in terms of energy savings, especially given the lost capacity and constant attacks on our energy system by Russia. This will result in higher electricity costs for consumers and businesses in the evening hours in spring, summer and autumn.
In addition, due to the “winter time”, Honcharenko emphasises, Ukraine will have a two-hour difference with Europe, which will significantly affect the effectiveness of cooperation with European partners.
On 16 July, the Verkhovna Rada passed Bill No. 4201 on timekeeping in the second reading, which would cancel the change of clocks to “winter” and “summer” time. This means that Ukrainians will set their clocks to “winter time” for the last time in autumn 2024 and stay there.
