First statements by Trump and his entourage: what awaits Ukraine

12 November 15:57

Donald Trump relies on businessmen in his administration and does not include supporters of Ukraine, Mike Pompeo and Nikki Haley, in his administration. At the same time, Trump Jr, the son of the US president-elect, said that assistance to Ukraine could end in 38 days. Publications in the Western media dictate a new course for US relations with Ukraine. Read the article Komersant ukrainskyi to find out whether it is important for Trump to end the war in Ukraine, whether the new US administration will implement the “pay for security” policy, and whether Europe is ready for new challenges

Media attention is focused on the first statements of US President-elect Donald Trump. And while he is in no hurry to make promises, his advisors and Western media are already outlining the new administration’s policy toward Ukraine. Experts advise to wait until Trump forms a circle of people with whom he will work in the future.

“I will not invite Nikki Haley or Mike Pompeo to join the administration” – Trump

Trump has decided not to invite Pompeo and Haley, who support Ukraine, to join his administration. US President Donald Trump has said that he will not invite either former Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley or former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to join his new administration. Trump wrote about this on the social network X.

“I have enjoyed and appreciated working with them in the past and would like to thank them for their service to our country,” Donald Trump.

Trump is currently meeting with potential candidates for positions in his administration before his inauguration on January 20. In particular, on Friday, according to Reuters, Trump met with a well-known investor Scott Bessent, who is a potential candidate for the post of US Treasury Secretary.

American political strategist Jason J. Smart in an exclusive commentary [Kommersant] noted that Trump’s reliance on businessmen may not be in Ukraine’s favor. However, he urges not to make hasty conclusions.

“This may not be the best option for Ukraine. What is important to Trump? To end the war. What will happen next? He is not interested in that. Trump said that it is important to him that the war is over. There’s a huge difference between ‘I’m going to deal with this situation’ and ‘I’m going to end it,'” said Jason J. Smart.

“38 days until we lose our aid” – Trump Jr

Donald Trump Jr, the son of the US president-elect, made a statement on Instagram that US support for Ukraine could end in a month. In a post accompanying a black-and-white meme depicting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy being showered with dollars, Trump Jr. wrote:

“You have 38 days left before you lose your benefits,” wrote Donald Trump Jr.

Analysts believe that this statement refers to the official confirmation of the results of the presidential election in early December and preparations for the inauguration of the new US president scheduled for January 20.

Valeriy Klochok, Head of the Center for Public Analysis “Vezha”, in an exclusive comment for [Kommersant] noted that an ideal scenario for Ukraine should not be expected, but a catastrophic development of events is not expected either.

“Given the information I have, there will be no ideal scenario for Ukraine, but there will be no catastrophes and no worse situation than there was under Biden,” Klochok emphasized.

According to the expert, European leaders are now facing an important issue of financing Ukraine’s security.

“Europe is complaining about who will pay for all this. Europe has long realized that it will have to pay for Ukraine’s security. Ukraine’s security is their security,” emphasized Valeriy Klochok.

The world leaders’ attention is now focused on supporting Ukraine, especially during such events as the UN conference in Baku. Klochok noted that some leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and British Labor leader Keir Starmer, did not attend the conference.

“Macron and Starmer are meeting and will hold talks to convince the Biden administration to authorize Storm Shadow missile strikes against Russia. They will also talk about the Middle East and, of course, support for Ukraine,” Klochok said.

According to him, funding for Ukrainian security is not only a matter of aid, but also the costs that the future US administration may demand.

“Donald Trump Jr. is making it clear that there will be no more free aid,” said Klochok.

The new Trump administration may introduce a business approach to military aid. There may be various programs: land loans, loans, etc., the expert added.

Klochok recalled an example when Donald Trump, during his first presidential term, brought Angela Merkel a “check for more than $300 billion” for the security the United States provides for Europe.

“Trump has a business approach: you have to pay for security. Given that Europe does not have much choice, it will have to pay these costs,” added Klochok.

According to Klochok, Poland can play an important role as an intermediary between Europe and the Trump administration. After all, Polish President Andrzej Duda may soon meet with the winner of the US presidential election, Donald Trump. They will discuss, among other things, Ukraine.

“Polish President Andrzej Duda, who has met with Trump on several occasions, may become one of the key bridges between Europe and the future US administration,” Klochok believes.

How exactly Trump sees the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine is still an open question, summarizes the Head of the Center for Public Analysis “Vezha”.

Trump and Putin’s conversation: has it happened yet?

Donald Trump had a telephone conversation with Russian President Putin, during which he discussed the war in Ukraine. At least that’s what The Washington Post’s sources say. As of November 12, there is no official confirmation from either side. Moreover, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied reports that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump allegedly had a phone call with Putin. According to him, the reports of the conversation are “completely fictitious,” emphasizing the absence of any contacts between the leaders on the date in question.

American political strategist Jason J. Smart commented on the media reports of a possible conversation between Trump and Putin.

“Usually, American newspapers need two or three sources to get reliable information. Here, the reference to one unnamed interlocutor is questionable,” Jason J. Smart said.

Thus, with the change of administration in the United States, Ukraine and Europe are facing new challenges in the field of security and foreign policy. Donald Trump’s decision not to involve Ukraine’s supporters, such as Nikki Haley and Mike Pompeo, indicates a possible revision of approaches to the war in Ukraine. The Trump administration may offer new models of support, but under the condition of “security payback,” which will require additional resources from European allies. In such a situation, it is important that Ukraine, the EU, and the US find a compromise that will ensure further support and security in Europe.
