Pentagon: Ukrainian Armed Forces will run out of weapons without US aid

24 January 2024 13:16

Without US financial and military aid, which is currently blocked, the Ukrainian armed forces are running out of ammunition and other weapons. The Pentagon is aware of this problem, but cannot do anything about it because the US Congress refuses to unblock the aid. This was reported by Celeste Wallander, a Pentagon official in charge of international security, Politico reports комерсант with reference to Politico.

According to her, since December, Washington has been unable to send the necessary military assistance to Ukraine at the same level as in the previous two years. The Pentagon has used up all the money allocated by Congress to replenish US stockpiles provided to Ukraine and has not yet approved new funding.

The latest aid package for Ukraine, announced on 27 December, included $250 million for artillery, air defence and other weapons.

Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder also said that the lack of funding had forced the Pentagon to “put on hold” sending additional weapons from its stockpile, “given the implications for our own military readiness”.

on 23 January, White House National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby stressed that, due to the current situation, the next few months would be critical for Ukraine.

“Festival of security agreements”

Against the backdrop of disappointing news about the lack of a solution for immediate assistance from our partners, the “Festival of Security Agreements with Ukraine” is gaining momentum, when Western countries guarantee our security under bilateral agreements such as the Budapest Memorandum. After signing the agreement with the UK, Ukraine’s next bilateral security agreement may be with Canada. In addition, Ukraine is negotiating relevant agreements with five other countries: The United States, France, Germany, Poland, and Italy. In particular, the United States Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, said that two rounds of talks had already taken place between Ukraine and the United States on the content and content of the relevant agreement with the US government. And French President Macron said that he would personally come to Kyiv to finalise the security agreement between Ukraine and France.

Ukraine is desperately trying to enlist the support of the world. In particular, the following 5 points of the Ukrainian Peace Formula were presented in Davos. At the previous consultations in Malta, the first five points of the Peace Formula were considered, which included nuclear and food security, the release of prisoners, and the restoration of territorial integrity and sovereignty. In Davos, an additional five points were presented: the withdrawal of Russian troops and the cessation of hostilities, the restoration of justice, environmental security, the prevention of escalation and recurrence of war, and the issue of confirming the end of the war.
