Pope calls for a diplomatic end to the war without recipients

26 February 09:35

In his Sunday address on 25 February, Pope Francis called for a diplomatic solution to the Russian-Ukrainian war. This was reported by citing Vatican News.

“Yesterday, on 24 February, we remembered with sorrow the second anniversary of the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine. How many victims, the wounded, destruction, suffering, tears have been caused during this period, which is becoming terribly long and whose end is still not in sight! This is a war that not only devastates this region of Europe, but also raises a global wave of fear and hatred. Renewing my most sincere commitment to the martyred Ukrainian people and praying for all, especially for the many innocent victims, I implore you to find that little bit of humanity that will help create the conditions for a diplomatic solution in the search for a just and lasting peace,” he said,

– the Pope said.

He also called for prayers for Palestine and Israel. The Pope also mentioned the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where violence has increased, and Nigeria, where kidnappings have become more frequent.

As in his previous statements, Pope Francis did not specify who is the aggressor in the Ukrainian-Russian war and on whom its end and diplomatic resolution depend.

Pope Francis has previously stated that the war in Ukraine is beneficial to arms dealers, and that Ukrainian refugees are better received in the world than refugees from other countries. He called the murdered daughter of Kremlin ideologue Alexander Dugin an “innocent victim of war” and called Russia “great”. In April 2022, the Vatican was going to hold a religious procession during which a Ukrainian and a Russian woman were to jointly carry the cross. It was only after the scandal over Dugina’s support that the Vatican issued a statement saying that “the large-scale war was initiated by the Russian Federation”. However, the Pope himself has never called Russia an aggressor.
