On 6 March, Polish farmers staged a large-scale strike in Warsaw for the second time, setting fire to tyres outside the office of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This was reported by Polsat News, according to Kommersant Ukrainian
The announced duration of the strike is from 9:00 on 6 March to 20:00 on 8 March. Thousands of people joined the protest. The organisers of the demonstration expect the number of protesters to reach 100,000.
The protesters wanted to drive to the centre of the Polish capital on tractors, but were stopped by the police and directed to the lane separating the roads. Officers of the Warsaw Police Headquarters reminded them that tractors and slow-moving vehicles are not allowed to enter the city.
However, several tractors managed to get into the centre of Warsaw.
Due to the protest, traffic in Warsaw is restricted and some roads are blocked.
Farmers protest outside the office of Prime Minister Tusk. Near the Sejm and the government building, the protesters set fire to car tyres, which the police extinguished with fire extinguishers. They also burned a coffin symbolising Polish agriculture.
The protesters oppose the European Commission’s Green Deal and the import of agricultural products from outside the EU.
“This Green Deal is the end for all of us. If the government does not protect us, we will die. There will be no Poland. We have all come together as one. There is strength in unity, and we will not allow the farmers to be divided,”
– said one of the protest leaders.
Later, the protesters marched to the Polish Sejm. There they threw firecrackers and barrels at the police. Clashes with police have already occurred at the protest.
It should be noted that on 27 February, farmers held a protest in the centre of Warsaw on Defilad Square. They also set off firecrackers, turned on sirens and lit several flares.
Polish Agriculture Minister Czeslaw Sekerski said the day before that due to the difficult situation of Polish farmers, Poland would demand changes to the Green Deal from the EU.
Border blockade
on9 February 2024, Polish farmers launched a new nationwide strike and blockade of the border with Ukraine, which will last until 10 March. The initiator was the independent farmers’ trade union Solidarity. The main demand of the protesters is to cancel the preferential trade regime with Ukraine and to return the permit system for importing goods into Poland.
Meanwhile, Poland has already imposed an embargo on Ukrainian grain, Polish Deputy Agriculture Minister Michal Kolodziejczak said.
Polish Minister of Development and Technology Krzysztof Hetman, in turn, said that Poland could impose an embargo on all Ukrainian agricultural products.
Ukrainians responded by blocking the border for Polish trucks.
The situation is deteriorating every day. There are cases of Ukrainian agricultural products in transit being dumped in Poland. For example, on the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, on 24 February, at around 9am, unknown persons damaged freight wagons with beans. On 25 February, eight wagons with Ukrainian corn were opened.
On 26 February, Polish farmers began blocking the border with Germany to prevent Ukrainian grain from entering the German market.
