Drunk drivers caused a thousand road accidents in 2024: in which regions the situation is the worst

The number of accidents caused by drunk drivers has increased by 19% since the start of the full-scale invasion. This is reported by Opendatabot, citing data from the National Police of Ukraine, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

Thus, in 2024, 65,702 reports were drawn up for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which is 2% more than in 2023 and 6% more than in 2021.

Where are the most drunk drivers

The highest number of drunk drivers was recorded in Dnipropetrovs’k region – 8,745 reports. Kyiv (8,176 reports) and Odesa (7,073 reports) are also among the three anti-leaders.

The lowest number of violations was recorded in:

  • Cherkasy region – 720 protocols,
  • Ternopil region – 816 protocols,
  • Ivano-Frankivsk region – 880 reports.

In addition to administrative cases, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine opened 1,054 criminal proceedings for drunk driving, an 11% increase compared to 2023. 57% of these cases went to court.

In total, 29,816 court decisions on drunk driving were issued in 2024, which is 14% more than before the full-scale invasion.

A total of 1,000 road accidents with fatalities and/or injuries occurred due to drunk driving in 2024. 110 people died in such accidents, and another 1302 people were injured. Overall, accidents caused by drunk drivers increased by almost 19% by 2021.

Currently, one in 25 road accidents with fatalities and/or injuries is caused by drunk driving.
