UAE includes artificial intelligence in school curriculum

This year, the United Arab Emirates will introduce artificial intelligence into public school curricula as the Gulf country seeks to become a regional leader in the development of AI technologies. It is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Bloomberg.

The new subject will be introduced in the 2025-2026 school year for all students from kindergarten to 12th grade. The course will cover the ethical aspects of using artificial intelligence, as well as the basic concepts and practical application of these technologies in the real world.

The UAE joins a growing group of countries integrating artificial intelligence into school education. Last month, Beijing also announced a similar step – the introduction of artificial intelligence courses for primary and secondary school students in China.

The Persian Gulf state is investing heavily in data centers used to train AI models and has created an investment fund for AI development. According to people familiar with the project, the fund could grow to more than $100 billion within a few years. The CEO of OpenAI Inc. CEO Sam Altman said last year that the Emirates could become the world’s “regulatory sandbox” for testing AI technologies and later lead the development of global rules that would limit their use.

Moreover, the UAE is the first country in the world to involve artificial intelligence in lawmaking.

UAE – USA

Meanwhile, the United States is considering easing restrictions on the sale of Nvidia Corporation products to the UAE ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit scheduled for mid-May, which could strengthen the UAE’s position in the regional race for artificial intelligence leadership. The American leader plans to visit the UAE during his trip to the Middle East in mid-May, which will also include visits to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Earlier, the UAE unveiled plans to invest up to $1.4 trillion over the next decade in energy, semiconductors, artificial intelligence infrastructure, and manufacturing in the United States.

Artificial intelligence: background

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that deals with the creation of systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This includes functions such as image, speech, and text recognition, decision making, language translation, and information generalization. Modern AI systems are based mainly on machine learning methods, especially deep learning using neural networks that are trained on large data sets.

In recent years, artificial intelligence has become an integral part of many areas of life, from personal assistants in smartphones to medical data analysis systems and autopilots in transportation. AI is divided into “narrow” (or specialized) AI, which is created to solve specific tasks, and “general” AI, a theoretical concept of a system that could perform any human-level intellectual tasks. Currently, all existing AI systems belong to the category of narrow artificial intelligence.

The development of artificial intelligence poses both enormous opportunities and serious challenges for humanity. On the one hand, AI can help solve complex problems in medicine, science, ecology, and other industries. On the other hand, there are ethical, security, and socioeconomic issues related to labor automation and the possible use of AI for harmful purposes. Therefore, the development of artificial intelligence is accompanied by efforts to create appropriate regulatory frameworks and ethical principles.
