Trump’s new personnel decisions are bad news for Ukraine

US President-elect Donald Trump has announced his next nominees for key positions in the country. If Trump’s previous plans for appointments had inspired optimism in Ukrainians, this time the news for Ukraine is not very good, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

Thus, Trump wants to see Florida Congressman Matt Goetz, known for his active opposition to supporting Ukraine, as US Attorney General. Goetz has repeatedly opposed the provision of military aid to Ukraine, including being one of the few congressmen who voted against the Lend-Lease law. In April 2022, this bill was supported by 417 lawmakers, and Getz was among the ten opponents.

In addition, Goetz proved to be one of the initiators of the ouster of the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2023, which significantly delayed consideration of further support for Ukraine. His actions then provoked an internal split in the Republican Party, which caused additional difficulties in making pro-Ukrainian decisions.

Trump justified his decision regarding Goetz by saying that the congressman was a key player in the fight against the so-called “Russia hoax” and advocated for investigations into government corruption and abuse of power at the Department of Justice. According to Trump, Goetz successfully uncovered “systemic corruption” in the government.

However, the future Attorney General is himself accused of corruption, such as receiving illegal gifts and even bribes, as well as sexual abuse, drug use, etc.

Trump plans to appoint former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, who also opposes providing aid to Ukraine, as Director of National Intelligence. In particular, she accused the United States of provoking a war with Russia, stating that the American “ruling elite wants to kill as many Russians as possible with the hands of Ukrainians.” In 2022, the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine warned that Gabbard was likely working for a foreign audience, acting in the interests of the Kremlin.

Gabbard also spread disinformation about the existence of laboratories with weapons of mass destruction in Ukraine, as part of a campaign to discredit Ukraine in the international arena.

Thus, these appointments proposed by Trump could have serious consequences for American support for Ukraine, as the selected candidates have clear anti-Ukrainian positions.

However, as wrote, Trump will have people who support Ukraine in other important positions.
