“Night Underground”: Kyiv Metro Sheltered 24 Thousand People During Russian Attack

On the night of June 6, during another massive Russian attack, the Kyiv metro turned into a shelter for about 24,000 residents of the capital, including 2,620 children.

This was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The attack lasted more than four hours. All this time, people, including those with small children and pets, were hiding in the subway.

The shelling damaged the infrastructure on the open section of the red metro line.

As representatives of the subway told hromadske , sleepers, rails, flooring, and part of the fence were damaged. The power cables, power supply and alarm systems were cut.

Emergency repair work is currently underway to replace rails and sleepers, restore the overhead network and electrical cables.

Trains are currently running from Akademmistechko station to Arsenalna at intervals of 5-5.5 minutes. The ground part of the red line – from Dnipra to Lisova – is temporarily closed to passengers.

To provide connections between certain districts, a bus route No. 1M has been launched, which runs between Lesnaya and Arsenalnaya stations during the time of subway restrictions.

On the night of June 6, 2025, Kyiv suffered one of the largest air attacks since the beginning of the full-scale war. Russian troops fired more than 400 drones and 44 missiles at six regions of Ukraine, including the capital. Three rescuers were killed in Kyiv, and at least 20 others were injured.

Consequences in Kyiv
In the Desnianskyi district, fragments of downed missiles damaged the road surface, trolleybus power lines, and partially smashed the windows of a store.

In Dniprovskyi district, shrapnel fell on the roof of a private house, causing damage.

The attack damaged tracks and cables on the open section of the red line of the metro, which led to the temporary closure of the Dnipro and Lisova stations.

During the attack, the Kyiv subway became a shelter for 24,000 people, including 2,620 children.

Situation in Kyiv region
In Kyiv region, fragments of downed rockets damaged a polyclinic, private houses, garages and cars.

Debris was also found near a maternity hospital, which led to the evacuation of patients and staff.

In total, seven private houses, a multi-storey building and other civilian infrastructure were damaged.

Government reaction
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack and called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia. He emphasized that such actions are another proof of Russia’s terrorist tactics.

Despite the successful work of air defense, the debris from the downed missiles caused significant damage to infrastructure and civilian casualties.
