An unexpected ally: The President of Argentina is preparing a summit to support Ukraine
29 February 16:05
Argentina’s newly elected President Javier Milei has said that he prioritises alliances with “countries that defend freedom”, including the United States, Israel and Ukraine. This was reported by Kommersant Ukrainian with reference to the Financial Times
He noted that Argentina has already provided Ukraine with two helicopters to counter Russian aggression. Moreover, these helicopters are Russian-made.
Miley is not going to stop there. According to the newspaper, the Argentine leader plans to hold a “Latin American support summit” for Ukraine in 2024.
Miley and Argentina
Javier Milei became President of Argentina on 10 December 2023. He describes his political views as libertarian, advocating minimal state intervention in the economy and any other spheres of public life.
Before the election of Milei, Argentina pursued a traditional foreign policy for the region, characterised by sympathy for Russia. In particular, it was announced that Argentina would be one of the countries to join Putin’s geopolitical brainchild BRICS from the beginning of 2024. After Milei took office, Argentina finally declared its non-alignment with Putin’s alliance. Milei clearly positions himself as an ally of the United States, and thus of Ukraine.
