15 November 13:40Ukraine may resume air travel next year by reopening Lviv airport for flights. This will be possible subject to an appropriate political decision and confirmation of safety from European regulators. Crispin Ellison, senior partner of Marsh McLennan insurance company, said this in an interview with Reuters, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
According to the insurer, in case of a positive decision, the insurance industry will be ready to support this process.
“If the regulators agree that it is safe to reopen and a political decision is made, the insurance industry is ready to support the recovery efforts,” he said,
– mr. Allison said.
Marsh McLennan is already working on creating an insurance fund to cover commercial aviation. According to Ellison, national and low-cost airlines are actively involved in the process:
“National carriers, low-cost carriers and Ukrainian airlines are showing interest and considering opportunities.”
The State Aviation Service of Ukraine (SAS) has indicated that it is considering partial opening of the airspace to civil aviation, but only if the risks are reduced to an acceptable level and additional security measures are implemented. There is no clear timeframe yet.
Lviv Danylo Halytskyi Airport, which could handle up to 3,000 passengers per hour before the war, is one of the most promising for reopening, as Lviv region is much less exposed to Russian shelling than other regions.
As for the reopening of the country’s main airport, Boryspil, experts believe that this is possible only after the risks are significantly reduced. Ellison noted that the market is waiting for the risks to be reduced.
