The most popular cereal in Ukraine will rise in price: how prices will change

In the Ukrainian market this year, purchase prices for buckwheat have almost doubled, reaching 15 thousand UAH/t, which will inevitably affect the retail price of the product. It is predicted that the price in stores may rise to 37-40 UAH per kilogram. This was stated by the director of the Ozerianka cereal mill, Anna Bosyuk, in a comment to Ukrinform, Komersant UkrainianKomersant Ukrainian reports

Ms. Bosiuk noted that this year the area under buckwheat was reduced. The summer was dry, which is why the crops did not fill up with the amount of grain that farmers expected.

“Now there are still remnants of last year’s buckwheat harvest, and farmers are holding on to it, waiting for the price to rise to sell it at a higher price. And if before the start of the new buckwheat harvest, we were buying grain for about 8-10 thousand UAH/t, now it is about 15 thousand UAH/t,” explained Ms. Bosiuk.

In turn, stores cannot react quickly to the price increase, as they have significant stocks. Instead, the new batch of buckwheat is already being re-evaluated upward.

“It is difficult to predict the price now, but we are guided by the fact that we will sell it at 30-35 UAH/kg, and in retail chains it will cost approximately 37-40 UAH,” the expert added.

At the same time, buckwheat should be enough for consumption in the domestic market of Ukraine and for export.

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, as of October 25, Ukraine harvested 126.9 thou tons of buckwheat. The harvest has been completed on 98% of the area.

In 2023, the buckwheat harvest in Ukraine amounted to 207.5 thsd tonnes.
