In October 2024, a unique astronomical phenomenon will appear in the sky – Comet C/2023 A3, which was discovered by the Chinese Tsuchinshan Observatory in January 2023. This celestial body will be one of the brightest in recent years, and it will be visible to the naked eye. This is reported by Gizmodo portal, Komersant ukrainskyi informs
Astronomers predict that on 12 October the comet will reach its closest point to Earth, and its stellar magnitude will be approximately 1.9, making it clearly visible even to ordinary observers. According to scientists, the best conditions for observing will be during this period.
Interestingly, even earlier, on 27 September, the comet will pass perihelion, the closest point of its orbit to the Sun. At this stage, the comet’s stellar magnitude may reach 3.4, which will also allow it to be observed without special instruments.
This cosmic phenomenon is extremely rare: the next time comet C/2023 A3 will approach the Earth is only in 80 thousand years, so the current generation has a unique opportunity to witness this celestial spectacle.
Astronomers advise to get away from city lights to enjoy the comet’s view to the fullest. For better observation, you can use a telescope or binoculars, but you can also see it without them. Experts also recommend not looking directly at the comet, but a little to the side – this will help to better capture its faint light.
