How much did Easter cake and eggs rise in price before Easter 2025: current prices
3 April 16:38
In 2025, making Easter cakes (3-4 medium-sized cakes, 500-600 grams each) at home according to a classic recipe using supermarket ingredients will cost UAH 318.4. This is 38.6% more than last year and 34.8% more than in 2023, Komersant ukrainskyi reports, citing the product monitoring of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club.
As Easter approaches, which this year falls on April 20 and for the first time in several years unites Eastern and Western rite Christians in celebration, Ukrainians are paying closer attention to food prices. Traditionally, it is in April that the demand for key components of the holiday table peaks. Currently, only groceries show a decline in prices, while dairy products, chicken and vegetables continue to rise in price. No drastic changes are expected in the next two weeks, as prices will either remain stable or fluctuate slightly.
Egg prices are the main indicator of the holiday rush
This year, eggs have once again confirmed their reputation as one of the most demand-sensitive products. In March, the average price of a dozen eggs reached UAH 76.4, which is 9% higher than a month earlier. This growth is attributed to a simultaneous seasonal decline in production, rising feed costs and increased demand before Easter.
The price was up 30% year-on-year. In some retail chains, a dozen premium eggs already cost more than UAH 90. Despite the increase in supply from industrial poultry farms, producers do not have time to fully cover the market’s needs.
After Easter, around mid-May, the price is expected to decline as private farms, which traditionally become more active with the onset of warm weather, enter the market. During this period, the price may drop to 55-60 UAH per dozen, which will be approximately 25% cheaper.

Easter cake is getting more expensive: Easter baking index breaks records
The traditional Easter treat, Easter cake, is becoming less and less affordable. In 2025, making 3-4 Easter cakes according to a classic recipe (weighing 500-600 g each) will cost Ukrainians UAH 318.4 , up 38.6% from a year ago. The main factors behind this growth are a significant rise in the price of basic ingredients.
The biggest blow to the consumer’s wallet is butter, the price of which has risen to UAH 121 per 200 g (71% over the year). This is due to both inflation and a decline in domestic production due to rising energy costs and a reduction in the number of cows. Milk also rose to UAH 30 per 0.5 liter (31%). And eggs, which are needed in large quantities, showed a 61% increase.
This year, 300 grams of sugar will cost 9.7 UAH (12%). And yeast, although not rising in price, also maintains a stable high price – up to UAH 13 for a standard package.

Easter basket: how much you will have to pay this year
The price of the Easter basket is one of the main markers of family well-being on the eve of the holiday. In 2025, it increased in all price segments.
Budget option (Easter cake, Easter eggs, salt, horseradish, candle): uAH 427 (33.2%). In 2024, such a basket cost about 320 UAH. Salt, although the cheapest of the components, has risen in price due to logistical problems in the producing regions. Horseradish has also risen in price due to a decrease in farm production.
Medium set (sausage, cheese, mustard added): uAH 847 (23.1%). Sausage costs 420-450 UAH/kg on average, and mustard costs 24 UAH per jar. Hard cheese, as already mentioned, has risen in price to 595 UAH/kg on average in Ukraine (21% over the year).
A full basket (with kahor, bacon, vegetables): 1185 UAH (17.2%). The price of cognac ranges from 100 to 170 UAH per bottle, depending on the manufacturer. Lard is stable at UAH 71.91 per 300 g, and vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers) range from 80-120 UAH/kg.
Prices may vary slightly in the regions. For example, in the western regions, where competition among sellers is higher, baskets are cheaper than in the center and east.

Vegetables and imports: what about tomatoes and cucumbers
Vegetables are an important, though not mandatory, component of an Easter basket. This year, prices for them have partially stabilized, thanks to active imports from Turkey, Spain, and partially from greenhouses in the southern regions of Ukraine.
Tomato prices range from 95 to 120 UAH/kg, depending on the variety and origin. Cucumbers cost between 75 and 100 UAH/kg. Over the month, prices decreased by 5-10%, but remain higher by 12-25% compared to April 2024.
The stability of the vegetable market is also affected by logistical constraints due to the war, rising fuel prices, and seasonal fluctuations in demand. Therefore, despite the increase in supply, no major price reduction is expected.
Why everything is getting more expensive and what to expect next
UCAB analyst Maksym Hopka explains that this year’s price situation is the result of a number of factors: inflation, seasonal changes, higher logistics costs, hryvnia exchange rate instability, and the psychological factor of the holidays. The rise in food prices is not only a consequence of shortages, but also a reflection of a shift in consumer demand in the run-up to Easter.
It is also important that in 2025 Easter is celebrated by both Orthodox and Catholics. This creates a double burden on the market, especially in border regions and large cities. Hopka predicts that prices could rise by another 5-7% in the two weeks before the holiday.
He also adds that despite the reduced purchasing power of the population, demand for Easter products remains consistently high. This is due to the fact that the holiday has a deep cultural and family meaning, and even in difficult times, people try to preserve traditions.
