michael Gloss, the 21-year-old son of the deputy head of the CIA, who signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry, died in the war against Ukraine. This was reported by the publication “Important Stories”, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
As noted, Michael’s mother, Juliana Gloss, served in the US Navy and has been working for the CIA for the past six years. Last year, she was appointed to the position of deputy for digital innovation. Michael’s father, Larry Gloss, also served in the U.S. Navy. He is now the head of an organization that creates security software for the US government and NATO countries.
The publication writes that since childhood, Michael was a member of the scouting movement. In his obituary, his family noted that he had a “keen sense of justice” and “wanted the world to be a better place with more justice, peace, and harmony with nature.”
Gloss studied at the private liberal arts college College of the Atlantic in Maine, but did not graduate as he set out to travel the world.
In early July 2023, Gloss began to prepare documents for a trip to Russia. He told his friends that he wanted to find a job there, obtain citizenship, and develop his “environmental project” to “reduce food price inflation.” In August, the American was already in Russia: he came to Vladikavkaz from Georgia. Then he traveled around the country for about a week, after which he came to Moscow to extend his visa.
However, already on September 5, a record with Gloss’s data appeared in the Unified Medical Information and Analytical System (UMIS) database: his address was listed as a contract recruitment center on Yablochkova Street, and his “apartment” was medical examination room 302. This was the address given to foreigners who came to Moscow to sign a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry and went to fight in Ukraine, the newspaper writes.
For the next two weeks, Gloss lived at the Avangard training center in the Moscow region, as evidenced by photos and videos posted by other foreign mercenaries. No later than September 23, his group was taken by bus to a military unit. Based on the photos, the publication found that Gloss was at the base of the 137th Regiment of the Russian Airborne Troops in Ryazan. “Michael told his family that he was ‘working’ in Russia and was raising money to go on a trip to Africa.”
Gloss was sent to the front after December 2023, his fellow soldier told the publication. According to the man, after training, Michael was assigned to an assault unit. At that time, the units of the 137th Regiment were located northwest of Soledar in Donetsk Oblast.
Gloss’s family said in his obituary that he “tragically died” on April 4, 2024, in “Eastern Europe.” He was buried in the United States eight months after his death.
According to Gloss’s girlfriend, his family learned of his death two months before the funeral from the Russian authorities.
