A rare first edition of the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which was to be disposed of, was sold at auction for more than £21,000 ($26,000). This was reported by the BBC, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.

The piece went under the hammer at NLB Auctions in Paignton on Saturday, with buyers bidding in the audience, by phone and online.

Daniel Pierce, who runs the auction house, found the book among the belongings of a deceased Brixham man destined for disposal.

According to him, the book was published in a first edition of 500 copies and was among 300 that were donated to public libraries.

It was the misspelling of the word “philosopher’s” on the back of the copy that helped Pierce determine that it was a first edition.

Pierce said the price was “an absolutely remarkable result for a first hardcover edition,” and added that the proceeds would be donated to the deceased’s relatives.
