Disguised as well-known telecommunications operators, the criminals send messages in messengers or social networks about the possibility of receiving funds to the account or connecting additional services. This was reported by Komersant ukrainskyi with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine (MIA) has issued a warning to citizens about a new fraud scheme that has become widespread recently. The criminals, disguised as well-known telecom operators, send messages via messengers or social networks, offering the opportunity to receive additional funds to a mobile account or connect profitable services.
However, under the guise of these offers, a cyber fraud scheme is concealed, which can lead to the loss of confidential information and financial losses.
How do scammers work?
Fraudsters use a variety of methods to get hold of your data:
- Fake operator’s website: Attackers create a fake website that looks almost identical to the official website of the mobile operator. This site promises bonuses for registering a SIM card with a passport.
- Phishing links: The fake resource contains instructions and links that lead to phishing pages of Bank-ID.
- Request for confidential information: Scammers ask you to enter confidential data, such as passwords to your personal account, financial information or other personal data, which allows unauthorised access to your accounts.
How can I protect myself from fraudsters?
In order to avoid falling into the trap of cyber fraudsters, the Ministry of Internal Affairs recommends following the following security measures:
- Verification of information: In case of receiving such offers, always check the information on the official websites and social media of telecom operators.
- Beware of suspicious links: Never click on links that look questionable or suspicious.
What should you do if you become a victim of fraud?
If you discover that your account has been hacked or your data has been compromised, contact your service provider and bank immediately. Also, be sure to report the fraud to the police for further investigation and to warn other potential victims.
