Kyiv’s bridges are overloaded by 3-4 times: how to change the transportation situation in the capital
27 November 12:23Kyiv bridges are currently operating at the limit of their capabilities, being under a significant load. This was stated by Kyiv City Council deputy Andriy Zadereiko on Novosti.LIVE, Komersant ukrainskyi reports.
Zadereiko emphasized that the capital’s bridges are working with an overload of three to four times. The reason for this is that Kyiv remains a transit hub for large vehicles. According to him, the capital needs to build new overpasses that meet modern standards.
“The bridges in Kyiv are three to four times overloaded, and the reason for this is the transit flow of large vehicles through the city. We need at least two additional bridges, both above and below the city,” he emphasized.
Zadereyko also noted that traffic management needs to be improved on the city’s three existing traffic rings: small, medium and large.
“We have three traffic rings in the city of Kyiv: small, medium and large, but they need to be made in accordance with all standards and conditions with lanes for public transport,” explained the Kyiv City Council member.
Zadereiko added that it is also necessary to reduce the time spent traveling around the city to 45 minutes, as required by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The state of bridges in Kyiv
In June 2023, the National Security and Defense Council decided to inspect bridges across the country, with the situation in Kyiv being particularly difficult.
Earlier, transport expert Dmytro Bespalov said that the capital’s Metro and Paton bridges were officially recognized as inoperable. According to him, even this status does not encourage local authorities to do anything about it.
