moscow rejoices in the conflict between trump and zelensky: what it means for ukraine

The recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, where the American president sharply criticized the Ukrainian leader, was clearly welcomed by Moscow. The Kremlin hopes that this will accelerate negotiations on the resumption of US-Russian relations, which are being conducted in a closed format, Komersant ukrainskyi reports, citing a CCN article.
According to media reports, the first round of US-Russian talks has already taken place in Riyadh, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov participating. The second round is scheduled for the near future, and it is likely to take place in the Persian Gulf region as well.
A key Kremlin official, Kirill Dmitriev, said that the talks could include energy deals, but details have not yet been disclosed.
At the same time, the Financial Times reports that discussions are underway to attract American investors to resume the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, which was suspended at the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Kremlin sees the weakening of US support for Ukraine as an opportunity to expand its economic and political influence. Dmitriev said that Russia could offer the United States lucrative deals in the energy and high-tech sectors. On social media, he even posted an image of a hypothetical US-Russian-Saudi mission to Mars, which he believes symbolizes possible future cooperation.
Currently, Moscow is actively promoting the idea that doing business with Russia is more profitable for the United States than continuing confrontation. They say that Russia has one of the largest reserves of rare earth metals, which makes it an attractive partner for industry. This strategy, according to Russian experts, may appeal to Trump, who always seeks to conclude deals with maximum benefit.
Amid the rapprochement between the United States and Russia, Europe is in a vulnerable position. The Trump administration is demonstrating a distancing from its traditional allies, which is causing concern among EU leaders.
In addition, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that changes in Washington’s foreign policy “largely coincide” with Moscow’s position. However, the question remains: why did Trump choose rapprochement with the Kremlin instead of supporting America’s longtime partners?
Some analysts suggest that the reason may be an ideological calculation – distancing Russia from China as part of a strategic confrontation. Other observers, however, believe that Trump’s actions are driven more by personal motives and a pragmatic desire to make lucrative deals.
In any case, relations between the United States and Russia are entering a radically new phase, causing tensions among Washington’s allies and dramatically changing the geopolitical balance of power.
