Ireland has selected new caretakers for the uninhabited island of Great Blasket – a young British couple, Camilla Rosenfeld and James Hayes. They will work on the island from April to the end of September 2025, Komersant ukrainskyi reports citing The Guardian.
This vacancy has become extremely popular since 2020, when 80 thousand applicants responded to it. Every year, many enthusiasts dream of living on a remote island, despite the lack of hot water, Wi-Fi, and stable electricity.
The island’s homeowners, Alice Hayes and her partner Billy O’Connor, announced a vacancy in January 2025. After reviewing applications and conducting video interviews, they chose 26-year-old Camille and James, for whom the job was a dream come true.

The couple will be responsible for managing five cottages and a coffee shop, which are usually run by the owners. They will live in a stone house next to the ruins of cottages that were abandoned in the 1950s.

The living conditions on the island are quite harsh: electricity is provided by a small wind turbine, there is no hot water, and there is no internet. The previous caretakers said that they often washed themselves with water from the stream, and they could only work during the day because it was too dark in the evening.
Despite the difficult weather conditions – strong winds, rain and waves – the couple is optimistic.
“I think we will enjoy watching the sunset, stargazing without light pollution, and relaxing with a book by candlelight,”
– Camilla said.
And James, who has been to the island only once, added:
“I sincerely think we will be recharged by the rhythm of our new life and the feeling of freedom. It’s a chance to live a simpler life.”
