Maria Melnychenko, Miss Ukraine 2024, is preparing to represent Ukraine at the international Miss World pageant in India on May 31. Her national costume, titled “Soul of the Earth. Keeper of Life” embodies a deep symbolism and tells the world about Ukraine as a source of strength, revival and hope. Photos of the costume posted on Instagram of the national contest have aroused the admiration of fans, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
The design is based on a deep respect for Ukrainian nature, women and the land that feeds millions. Wheat is not just a decorative element here, but a symbol of Ukraine’s food mission. It reminds us of Ukraine’s role as one of the main breadbaskets of the planet, which continues to provide the world with bread even in times of war.
The golden tones of the fabric, a scattering of symbolic grain, and embroidery in the form of ears of grain – all of this represents the Ukrainian land: fertile, generous, and infinitely strong even in times of war.
“The wheat in the image is not just a decor. It is a symbol of Ukraine’s food mission, which, even in times of war, remains one of the world’s main breadbaskets,” the contest team notes.
The transparent cape that fits easily on the shoulders represents the steppe wind and endless fields. And the headdress, a crown of golden ears, symbolizes the sun and the female power that gives life, heals and protects.
“This costume is not just about beauty. It’s about a woman as a guardian of life, who combines fertility, strength, gentleness and indestructibility. She is like a seed from which the future sprouts,” the authors of the image add.
What we know about Maria Melnychenko
Maria won the national contest in December 2024. It was the first broadcast of Miss Ukraine after the start of the full-scale war. She is a 4th year student at the State Tax University in Irpin, majoring in Finance, Banking and Insurance.
Maria has 10 years of experience in ballroom dancing. She is also an active tennis player, skilled in skiing and snowboarding. She also supports military training and participates in charity initiatives.
